Most AI tools for Google Ads fall into the first category. They pull reports, surface metrics, and suggest generic next steps. “Consider adding negative keywords.” “Test new ad copy.” “Review your bid strategy.” Not wrong. Just not useful.

I built an audit workflow that does this. One command. A complete diagnostic. Here is what it actually produces, and more importantly, the judgment encoded in each layer.
The layers of analysis
A single audit command pulls four datasets simultaneously: campaign performance, ad group performance, keyword data, and search term data. That alone is not remarkable. Any reporting tool can pull data.
What matters is what happens next.
The workflow calculates account level benchmarks first. Total spend, total conversions, account average CPA, account ROAS. From those, it derives two thresholds that drive every subsequent decision: a zero conversion flag (any entity that consumed more than 5% of total spend without a single conversion) and an inefficiency flag (any entity with a CPA more than double the account average).
These thresholds are not arbitrary. They come from auditing over 300 accounts and identifying where the patterns consistently surface actionable waste versus noise.
Campaign level: settings and strategy
The first layer checks what most teams skip entirely.
Is the Search Network partner enabled? That is a default setting that silently leaks budget to lower quality placements. Is the Display Network toggled on for Search campaigns? Another default that sends search budget to display placements with zero intent. Is location targeting set to “Presence or Interest” instead of “Presence only”? A setting that shows ads to people merely researching a location rather than physically being there.
These are not edge cases. They appear in roughly 60% of the accounts I audit. Each one is a budget leak that has been running since the campaign was created, often unnoticed for months or years.
The workflow then evaluates bidding strategy against actual performance data. Smart bidding with fewer than 15 conversions per month lacks the signal volume to optimize effectively. A target CPA set three times below the actual CPA creates a strategy fighting against itself. An uncapped smart bidding setup without any target gives the algorithm no efficiency guardrail.
A senior account manager checks all of this. The workflow ensures it is checked every time, on every account, with the same rigor.
Keyword level: status aware filtering
This is where most automated tools produce misleading recommendations. They flag keywords for action without checking whether those keywords are actually active.
A keyword in a paused ad group is already effectively paused. A keyword in a paused campaign is not spending budget. Recommending that someone pause an already inactive keyword is not just unhelpful. It erodes trust in the entire analysis.
The encoded workflow applies parent status filtering. It only flags keywords where the full chain is active: campaign enabled, ad group enabled, keyword enabled. Everything else gets noted as historical context but never presented as an action item.
For active keywords, the analysis identifies zero conversion keywords above the spend threshold, keywords with CPAs more than double the account average (calculating the excess spend for each), and low quality score keywords that are actively draining budget. It also surfaces the top performing keywords, because diagnostics is not just about finding problems. It is about identifying what to protect and scale.
Search term level: categorization and cross referencing
Search term analysis is where generic AI tools fail most visibly. They flag non converting terms without context. They recommend adding terms as keywords without checking if those terms already exist elsewhere in the account.
The encoded workflow categorizes every non converting search term into four groups: competitor and brand names, irrelevant and off topic queries, informational and low intent searches, and terms that are relevant to the business but have not yet converted. Each category has a different implication and a different recommended action.
More importantly, when the workflow identifies a converting search term that is not yet added as a keyword, it cross references against every active keyword in the account. A term with a status of “none” in one ad group might already be targeted as an exact match keyword in a different ad group. Recommending it as a new keyword would create redundancy, not opportunity.
This cross referencing step is something a senior account manager does mentally. They know the account well enough to recognize when a search term is already covered. The workflow makes this check systematic and exhaustive, across every term, every time.
The judgment that ties it together
Each layer of analysis feeds into the next. Campaign level waste informs where to look at ad group performance. Keyword findings shape which search terms to prioritize. The workflow produces a severity classification for every finding: critical when wasted spend exceeds 10% of total, medium when it falls between 5% and 10%, and low priority for smaller amounts that still clear the threshold.
It distinguishes between a targeting problem and a funnel problem. If a keyword shows strong click through rate and good quality score but zero conversions, the issue is not the keyword. It is the landing page or the conversion process. That distinction changes the fix entirely, and missing it leads teams to pause keywords that are actually generating qualified traffic.
The final output is a prioritized action list ordered by estimated monthly impact. Not a data dump. Not a list of metrics. A sequence of specific actions, ranked by the dollars at stake.
Why this matters for teams
When a single audit produces this depth of analysis consistently, two things change.
First, every account gets the same standard of review regardless of who runs it. A junior team member running the workflow produces the same diagnostic depth as the senior person whose judgment was encoded. The quality floor rises across the entire team.
Second, the senior people get their time back. Instead of spending hours on mechanical analysis, they spend minutes reviewing the output and making the strategic calls that require human context. The AI handles what can be systematized. The human handles what cannot.
